New Canadian Trip Added !

September 10 to 16, 2022
(6 nights at the lodge, 6 days of fishing)

We are excited to announce this new trip for 2022– a trophy smallmouth trip to Century Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario. This special trip is in the fall, when the fish are at their biggest size of the year.

Eagle Lake is a huge lake and the main basin has numerous resorts. However, far distant from these resorts is quiet Osbourne Bay and the only lodge in this huge bay is Century Lodge, located on a small island.

Century Lodge is a superb family-run lodge most known for big muskies. But Osbourne Bay also has huge smallies which are overlooked by the muskie fans. Additionally, the lodge also recently gained access to another smaller nearby lake that is filled with smallies. So side trips are possible to this other smallie-filled lake. This deluxe wilderness trip offers guests the opportunity to battle the largest smallmouth of their lives.

The Century Lodge trip is just 7 guests. So no crowding in camp or on the water. Century Lodge is a drive-in, boat-in lodge. There is a good road from the Minnesota border to Eagle Lake, to a private landing where the lodge staff picks you up in their boat for the ride to their island.

Your trip host, Dan Johnson, recently stayed at Century Lodge and fished Osbourne Bay. He attests that the lodge is first rate, their boats are excellent and the smallies are indeed huge. Your expert host provides guests with expertise, assistance, flies and extra tackle.

Since the Eagle Lake trip is a new one, you should check out the Century Lodge website

Why Fish in Canada?

Tremendous (and overlooked) fishing!

Many fly fishers travel to distant waters in the Bahamas, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and other remote locations.  But far fewer go to nearby Canada.  This is because many places in the Caribbean and South America are continuously hyped and promoted in the fly fishing industry, so a large bread trail to them has been established.  But this also means that crowding and fishing pressure is quite heavy in many of these locations, and the better fishing was years ago.

Meanwhile, Canada has tens of thousands of pristine lakes, many rivers, and a vast amount of lightly fished waters. For great species like smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskies, and lake trout, Canada’s waters are unrivaled.  Smallmouth Angler staff have fished Canadian waters for decades, and we are still amazed at the quality of the fishing.  It is also amazing how few fly anglers realize this, and they miss out on this tremendous resource just over our border.

Sure, a passport is required, but the language is the same, laws are similar, food is great, no need to change your money, and frankly many Canadians are friendlier than many Americans.   It’s a great country to spend time in.

A reason why even fly fishers who love smallmouth overlook Canada is because they believe lake fishing for smallies is a deep, difficult and tedious affair.  They like rivers because the fish are shallow and relatively easy to target with a fly rod.  Well, the lake trips we offer are a lot like river fishing, and even better in some ways.  In the spring and the fall, North Country lake smallmouth are shallow, and sight fishing is often a possibility. Plus there are no tricky currents to contend with, craft handling is easier, waters are very uncrowded and the average size of the smallmouth is very large.

Isn’t it time for you to take a Canadian trip this year?
